The AFL-CIO urges everyone to sign this petition.
A new tax on certain health care plans is threatening to hurt working families. But it’s not too late for Congress to repeal the tax before it goes into effect.
During the congressional debates on the Affordable Care Act, many lawmakers opposed the 40% health benefits tax. Because employers can escape the tax by making working people pay more when we need health care, it hurts the people that health plans are supposed to help. Women, seniors and people dealing with chronic illnesses will be hurt the most. We need to make our voices heard right now to make sure this burdensome tax is repealed.

This tax was designed to increase what working people have to pay for health care when we are sick. And that forces us to make hard choices that we shouldn’t have to—paying more or going without the care we need. In fact, a recent poll found that seven out of 10 emergency room doctors are seeing patients who have insurance but have gone without or delayed medical care because of high out-of-pocket expenses, like co-pays and deductibles.
More than 160 Democrats and 120 Republicans in Congress already are supporting repeal because they realize this tax is hurting the working families they were elected to represent. Momentum for repeal is in our favor. Now is the time to step up the pressure.
