"Right to Work" Poll from Protect MO Families - Tuesday, January 13, 2015

We need your input - Do you think Missouri should become a so-called "Right to Work" state?

Please take a quick moment to take our poll on "Right to Work."

Legislative session just began in Missouri, and already SEVEN so-called "Right to Work" bills have been filed.

We need to show the Missouri legislature that most Missourians DO NOT want to become a so-called "Right to Work" state...before it's too late!

Protect MO Families is dedicated to stopping so-called "Right to Work" legislation in Missouri, but we will need your help, too!  Whether it's sharing a Facebook post, sending an email or tweet, attending a rally, or making a phone call, you can be involved in the fight to stop "Right to Work" in Missouri.

Thanks for your hard work,
The PMF Team

Union-Made Tires - Monday, January 12, 2015

In the Nov-Dec 2014 issue of "Label Letter: Union Label & Service Trade Department, AFL-CIO," the United Steelworkers discovered trade issues between Chinese tire manufaturers.  The prices of these tires may be cost-effective but the quality is low and they're killing the U.S. domestic markets.

So how do you find union-made tires?  The U.S. Department of Transportation requires each tire to have a code that shows the company and location of the manufacturing plant.  An example of the code would be:  DOT BE ## ### ###.  Listed below are for factory codes throughout the U.S.

BE: B.F. Goodrich, Tuscaloosa, Ala.

BF: B.F. Goodrich, Woodburn, Ind.

VE, YE, YU, 8B: Bridgestone/Firestone, Des Moines, Iowa

D2, E3, W1, Y7: Bridgestone/Firestone, La Vergne, Tenn.

2C, 4D, 5D: Bridgestone/Firestone, Morrison, Tenn.

UP: Cooper, Findlay, Ohio

UT: Cooper, Texarkana, Ark.

JU, PC, UK: Goodyear, Medicine Hat, Alberta

JJ, MD, PU: Goodyear, Gadsden, Ala.

DA: Dunlop, Buffalo, N.Y.

JN, MJ, PY: Goodyear, Topeka, Kan.

JE, MC, PT: Goodyear, Danville, Va.

JF, MM, PJ: Kelly-Springfield, Fayetteville, N.C.

CF: Titan Tire, Des Moines

JH, MN, PK: Titan Tire, Freeport, Ill.

B plus serial #: Titan Tire, Bryan, Ohio

CC: Yokohama Tire, Salem, Va.

EPA - Friday, June 13, 2014

Dear Neighbor,

EPA has just released sweeping plans to regulate the power plants that make affordable power possible for so many of us. Earlier this year, you helped us push back on EPA when it targeted future power plants. Now we need your help again. Please return to and tell EPA its plans for existing plants won't work.

Left unchecked, EPA will write rules that could threaten your electric provider’s ability to keep affordable power flowing to homes, businesses and other foundations of your community. At, you can learn more about why EPA's goals could be too far, too fast.

Your voice counts! Washington, D.C. and its government agencies need to hear that we are concerned. They need to know that we understand the connection between affordable electricity, our pocketbooks and a thriving economy. When government moves too far, too fast, we all stand to lose.

Thank you for standing with us once again by sending an email at or filling out a postcard at a community event or electric cooperative meeting.

Delay in Keystone XL Decision - Monday, April 21, 2014

Delay in Keystone XL Decision is "Cold, Hard Slap in the Face to American Workers"

April 21, 2014

Tom Owens

Keystone XL Delay is "Cold, Hard Slap in the Face" to American Workers

WASHINGTON, DC -- The following statement was released today by Sean McGarvey, President of North America’s Building Trades Unions, in reaction to the announcement by the US Department of State to further extend the comment period for the review of the Keystone XL pipeline:

“The actions by the Obama Administration to further extend the review process for the Keystone XL pipeline is a cold, hard slap in the face for hard working Americans who are literally waiting for President Obama's approval and the tens of thousands of jobs it will generate.

Despite this administration’s own findings that the Keystone project will result in significant economic benefits to our country, President Obama has placed politics over substantive policy that only serves to advance the agenda of well funded radical environmentalists.

Where does this leave the President’s actual core constituency of working Americans? Why does President Obama continue to side with radicals instead of the middle class that, twice, put him office, and supports this project by a significant majority?

It's ironic that at the same time billionaire conservatives are coming under increasing scrutiny and criticism by the left for their involvement in politics, there is nary a word about the political spending by liberal billionaires that negatively impact the job prospects and livelihoods of working class Americans.”

Right to Work - Wednesday, April 02, 2014

Ally Leaders standing with us against "Right to Work:"
Thank you for joining our coalition to defeat so-called "Right to Work" in the Missouri Legislature this year.  Our records show you as the point of contact for your organization, group, or business.
We just received word that "Right to Work" will likely be voted on tomorrow (Wed., April 2) in the Missouri House of Representatives. We need you to activate your membership, friends and family now to contact their State Representatives to urge them to vote NO on "Right to Work."

Please spread these action alert links far and wide
We are anticipating a vote on "Right to Work" on Wednesday. Please email your State Representative now and urge them to oppose "Right to Work." Or look up your Representative's phone number here and call them now.
Tell your Representative that these out-of-state laws being pushed by corporate CEOs are bad for Missouri's working families: they'll lower wages and benefits at a time when the middle class is already struggling.

Give the EPA your opinion - Tuesday, March 18, 2014

Business partners of Associated Electric Cooperative Inc:

We’re asking for your help to preserve coal as a viable source of fuel for power plants, both new plants and existing plants like ours.

Associated Electric Cooperative, owner of electrical generation facilities, along with most other electric cooperatives, believes and advocates for a strategy on our nation’s energy policy that includes all forms of energy.  However, the Environmental Protection Agency is pursuing an “all-BUT-one” approach, and that one is COAL.

Coal helps keep electric rates affordable in this country.  Your livelihood may be affected by coal generation facilities.

You can be a tremendous help in preserving the COAL option by taking a simple step to let the EPA know you support COAL for generating electricity.  Please join me and use this link to give the EPA your opinion, .

Thank you in advance for your assistance,

Ken Wilmot

Director of Power Production

International News Flash - Wednesday, February 26, 2014

LEAP NewsFlash header

Dear Boilermaker Members,

As you may know, proposed EPA regulations governing new coal-fired power plants are so restrictive they would require carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. But this technology is prohibitively expensive, it has not been adequately tested, and it is not even in use on a commercial scale.

This rule is preventing even the cleanest, most advanced new coal-fired plants from being built in the United States. The rule is costing Boilermakers thousands of man-hours of work, killing jobs for union coal miners and others in coal-dependent businesses, raising electricity rates for consumers; and undermining the reliability of our energy systems.

We are joining with other groups to sign a petition urging EPA to change course. Please make your voice heard. Take just a few seconds to sign our petition.

You may sign the petition at:

(link is in the photo slide show on the home page)

Deadline to sign is Monday, March 10, 2014.

Please share these links widely and ask your family, friends and neighbors to sign the petition!

In Solidarity,

Boilermakers Department of Government Affairs

Federal Court Says Prevailing Wages Can Be Set For H2b Visa Jobs

February 6, 2014

Dear Building Trades Leader:

The Third District Court of Appeals handed American workers a victory with their ruling in the case of Louisiana Forestry Association v. Secretary, U.S. Department of Labor.

The court found that the Department of Labor’s wage regulation methodology is valid pertaining to H-2b visas, meaning the Department of Homeland Security must rely on the Labor Department’s decisions about the number of American workers available for a job.

Right to Work - Thursday, January 30, 2014

Hi Joe,

It was nice meeting you at the Building & Trades meeting! Thank you and the Boilermakers for signing on to join our efforts against Right to Work in Missouri. It will take all of us working together to defeat it.

Sorry for my delay in response about getting a banner for your hall. I checked to see if we have any extras. We have already placed all of the existing ones that we have and won't be having any more printed until we know if it's going to the ballot (probably around May). If Local 83 is still interested in having a banner or sign printed right now, I can send you all the artwork/graphics that we use so that you can have one printed. We can help with any other messaging for that as well. Let me know if that's something you're interested in, and if there is anything else with which I can help.

I also wanted to see if Local 83 has any avenues (email lists, your facebook page, etc) that you could help us spread the word about an online petition to Speaker Tim Jones that we're working on with other anti-Right to Work coalitions. Below is the link to the petition, and I attached some "sample messaging" that our coalition members can use if you want to send it to your membership. Do you think you can help us spread the petition? There's a little more than 5,000 signatures right now; in a few weeks we'll be delivering the signatures to Speaker Jones.

Hope to talk to you soon and thanks for all your work!
